Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah reiterated that the party did not change its stances over the presidential elections. “Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun is a strong candidate for the presidential polls who garners large popularity,” he added. Nasrallah stressed that the party is still supporting Aoun’s candidacy for the elections.
Speaker Nabih Berri postponed on Wednesday the cabinet session tasked to elect a new president until next month due to a lack of quorum. Last Wednesday, Berri also postponed the parliamentary session tasked to elect a new president until September 2, after only MPs from the March 14 camp and his Development and Liberation bloc attended the session. Lebanon has been plunged in a political deadlock due to the rivalry among politicians on the presidential post. The presidential seat, which became vacant after the mandate of President Michel Sleiman ended in May last year, has hindered the government's ability to tackle security, economic and social issues.
