The case of former Minister Michel Samaha may be among the fastest cases to
be uncovered. The file became almost complete, with documents, evidence and
confessions making the next stage uncomplicated and making it almost impossible
to organize a campaign supporting the former Minister.
The following facts are now certain:
Samaha transported the explosives from Syria to Lebanon following the
request of Major General Ali Mamlouk, and he received them from General Adnan
who is responsible for the containers of explosive devices, according to
information made available to LBCI.
The targets included MP Kahled Daher, his brother, MP Mouin Merhebi and
figures supporting the Syrian opposition.
The explosive devices are not similar to those used during the assassination
of Georges Hawi or the assassination attempt against May Chidiac. According to
security information to LBCI, the explosive are more developed and have a wider
destructive capability.
The witness, whose real name is Miled Kfoury, and who has three fake names:
Zouhair Nahhas, Amjad Srour and Majed Gharib, worked with late Minister Elie
Hobeika in the security apparatus where Minister Samaha used to work.
From the beginning of 1990s until the mandate of former President Emile
Lahoud, he worked with the intelligence chief back then General Michel Rahbani
and his assistant General Jamil al-Sayyed. From the year 1998 until August
2005, he worked with General Jamil al-Sayyed until the arrest of the latter. From
this date, he moved to work with Minister Mohammad Safadi until last July for
reasons he preferred to keep unknown.
The question that arises: what is the importance of the
witness?
What is important is that Samaha confessed faster that the
investigators ever expected. Consequently, it became very difficult to build a
defense line through counter-scenarios.
If it wasn’t for Samaha’s case, Egypt would have been in the
frontline, as the Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi made three major changes:
He cancelled the Constitutional Declaration issued by the
ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, that gives the Army wide powers.
He ordered Defense Minister Tantawi and Chief
of Staff to retire
He appointed Judge Mahmoud Mekky as
vice-President.
