Israel tells US that action in Rafah necessary amid Hamas rejection of hostage release proposals

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said in a statement on Monday that Israeli military action in Rafah is necessary due to Hamas rejecting proposals made by mediators regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, under which the group would release some hostages.

The statement said that Gallant conveyed this message in an overnight call with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
