Calm prevails in Koura in election aftermath, Karam pledges ongoing cooperation

Calm prevailed over Koura on Monday morning following Sunday’s sub-elections, where residents began removing photos and banners of the candidates.

However, the army maintains its patrols across the region.

Election victor Fadi Karam announced that Koura will be turning a new page, and cooperation will be ongoing amongst all the areas political affiliates. “14th of March has progressed in terms of the numbers of Orthodox votes,” he added.

For his part, Walid al-Azar stated via LBCI that the figures pertaining to the elections are a positive indication of the “increase of the Sunni vote to our favor”.

This as Interior Minister Marwan Charbel has previously announced in a press conference Monday the results of the Koura by-election which came as follows: Fadi Karam (12,412), Walid Al-Azar (11,141), John Mfarrej (311), Naiim Ojeimi (94), Youssef Skaf (1) and Georges Matar (0 votes).

The Minister said that yesterday's peaceful election day is a triumph for democracy embodied by Koura's voters and politicians, hoping that  the 2013 general elections will be conducted in a similar atmosphere.
