Representative of Maj. Gen. al-Sayyed files penal lawsuit against French journalist Malbrunot
The media office of Major General Jamil al-Sayyed said on Tuesday that lawyer Akram Azoury, representing al-Sayyed, has filed a penal lawsuit before the Lebanese judiciary against French journalist George Malbrunot.

On the 10th of February 2014, Malbrunot published an article in the French magazine Le Figaro, which included slander and defamation against al-Sayyed.

Malbrunot, who was taken hostage in 2004 by the Islamic Army in Iraq, had visited Maj. Gen. al-Sayyed to thank him for facilitating his release.

French magazine “Le Figaro” published an article titled “Lebanese spy embarrasses the UNESCO” (Un espion libanais embarrasse l'Unesco), whereby it said that Maj. Gen. Jamil al-Sayyed will become the representative of the Marshall Islands at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The article noted that naming al-Sayyed for this position aims at granting him immunity to protect him from any potential legal prosecution by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, pointing out that the UNESCO cannot reject his nomination.

The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands, is an island country located in the northern Pacific Ocean, with a population of 60 thousand.
