Future bloc MP Jean Ogassapian said Tuesday that the arrest of radical cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir ups the responsibility of security apparatuses to arrest other fugitives, denouncing all attacks against Lebanese Armed Forces and LAF Commander Major general Jean Kahwagi. Ogassapian’s comments were made during an interview with Nharkom Said TV Show whereby he stressed that the extension for Khawagi’s mandate would not have been possible without Hezbollah's consent. As for relations between the Free Patriotic Movement and the Future Movement, he stressed the importance of having good crisis management skills to even out differences prevalent between the two parties. Following the arrest of fugitive hardline cleric Ahmad Assir at Beirut International Airport, the interrogations revealed that the latter had not undergone any surgical operations to his face. The investigations have led to the arrest of 3 people so far, including Hussam Rifai, another wanted fugitive. Assir will be referred to the Intelligence Directorate of the Lebanese Armed Forces following the interrogations. Assir is a radical anti-Hezbollah preacher who led clashes against the Lebanese Army in June 2013 from the Bilal al-Rabbah mosque in the neighborhood of Abra, sidon, south of Lebanon. The clashes resulted in the deaths of 19 Army soldiers and at least 40 of combatants fighting for Assir. Supporters of Assir have gone into hiding in the aftermath of the 2013 battles. Security forces have beefed up efforts to track down the fugitives, especially after several Assir supporters were linked to a number of suicide bombings in Lebanon. On a separate note, Ogassapia lamented the "significant Iranian political activity in the region," adding that he expects settlements in the near future.
