Jumblatt: Lebanon is not another Gaza

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt said on Monday that following Brig. Gen. Wissam Hassan's assassination, all world powers advised for political calm and dialogue in Lebanon, hence why he "drafted a "rescue" initiative."

During a press conference he held to address the current political crisis in Lebanon and declare the main points of his "rescue" initiative, Jumblatt reiterated past crises as a reminder of how "Lebanese factions overcame hurdles that otherwise would've proven disastrous on the country."  He noted that during past points of contention, the Syrians and the Saudi's agreed to distance political repercussions from the STL pre-indictment, calling for calm between Lebanese political factions at the time [2010].

Jumblatt did not fail to recognize positive achievements made on the part of the current cabinet, saying that some parties forget that the current cabinet funded the STL twice, and safeguarded agreements with the UN. “If Hezbollah holds evidence on the involvement of Israel in the assassination of PM Hariri, let it present it,” Jumblatt added.

On the other hand, Jumblatt called on the Lebanese judiciary to issue indictments in the cases of  former minister Michel Samaha and  late Brig. Gen. Wissam Hassan’s assassination, stressing that “in case the judge is fearful, let him resign.”

Commenting on the issue of exrtra-state arms, Jumblatt pointed that each cabinet agreed on the formula: "the army, people and resistance", stressing that “one day this must change, and President Michel Sleiman was able to draft a basis of a defense strategy that would change this formula”.

On the Syrian level, PSP leader said that the Syrian crisis can set the entire region into violence if partisans do not reach consensus, noting that the Lebanese factions are equally divided on the Syrian issue.

On Larijani's visit to Syria, Jumblatt said that it was necessary, adding that Lebanon is neither another Gaza nor a battleground for Iran, and should remain neutral from all surrounding conflicts.
