Former Vice-Governor of Banque Du Liban (BDL) Ghassan al-Ayash said on Monday during an interview with Nharkom Said TV show on LBCI that “liabilities in Lebanon exceeds assets,” underlining that “the country is facing a never seen before monetary and banking sector crisis in the history of Lebanon and the world.” He further pointed out that the Code of Currency and Credit does not allow the Central Bank to lend the government. Al-Ayash also considered that Mount Lebanon Public Prosecutor judge Ghada Aoun is “acting against BDL Governor Riad Salameh on individual level and on less important cases such as money laundering and embezzlement.” "Judge Aoun's acts are political in nature and disrespectful to the Lebanese republic, the Lebanese justice system, and the Central Bank," he continued. He reiterated that “defamation against the Governor of BDL should cease until the charges and clarifications are proven.” Ayash was surprised with the rumor spreading about appointing a judicial guardian for Riad Salameh, insisting that “such a clause does not exist in the Code of Currency and Credit.” "Any accusation leveled against the Governor of BDL should also be referred to the Finance Minister," he concluded.
