Mikati: speculations surrounding violation of depositors’ rights aims at creating state of confusion

Prime Minister Najib Mikati, stressed on Tuesday that "one of the government's priorities in the economic recovery plan is to preserve depositors’ rights, not to forfeit them."

Mikati’s speech came during his meeting with the Association of Banks earlier today.

“The recovery plan’s priority is to preserve people's rights and reactivate the country’s various productive sectors, as well as to preserve the banking sector, which constitutes a key element in economic recovery,” Mikati added.

“Everything that is being said about violating depositors’ rights and crushing the banking sector aims at creating a state of confusion and raising the stakes,” warned Mikati.

Prime Minister later met with a delegation representing the General Labor Confederation headed by Captain Bechara al-Asmar, and also chaired a meeting of the "Digital Transformation Ministerial Committee", which unanimously agreed that digital transformation was an urgent and necessary need for Lebanon, as it constituted the first step required for the administrative advancement process.

During the meeting, State Minister for Administrative Development Najla Riachy said that she had submitted a draft of the national strategy for digital transformation and that the PM requested this strategy be presented to the Council of Ministers next Thursday for study and approval.

Mikati separately welcomed French Ambassador to Lebanon Anne Grillo with whom he discussed the latest political developments in Lebanon and the region.

Archdiocese of Zahle and Bekaa for the Melkite Greek Catholics Archbishop Ibrahim Ibrahim also had an audience with the Prime Minister at the Grand Serail.

It is worth mentioning that Prime Minister Mikati is set to chair a Cabinet session next Thursday at 10:00 am at the Grand Serail.
