Al-Shami heads Lebanese delegation to IMF annual meetings in Washington
Deputy Prime Minister of Lebanon’s Caretaker Government Saadeh al-Shami headed the Lebanese delegation to the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, held in Washington from October 10 to 16, 2022. The delegation held a series of meetings with officials of the International Monetary Fund.
Al-Shami explained to those who met the progress that has taken place since Lebanon signed the staff agreement with the International Monetary Fund, regarding the prior measures that Lebanon must implement before concluding the final agreement with the Fund.
He also explained the reasons for the delay in some procedures resulting in particular from the political situation and the recent parliamentary elections and the presidential elections in the country. He also referred to the positive repercussions of the maritime borders demarcation agreement.
In his intervention at the G-24 meeting, Deputy Prime Minister al-Shami stressed the need to help Lebanon in these difficult circumstances.
The Lebanese delegation found, as a result of its talks in Washington, that the international community and international institutions are still interested in helping Lebanon, even though there was a sense that their patience was running out due to the slow reform process and that the international community's interest is shifting more toward developing and poor countries that experience severe crises as a result of the challenging global economic environment.
