Environment Minister highlights Beirut's alarming pollution levels in wake of emergency meeting on generators

Environment Minister Tamara El-Zein posted a photo on her X account showing a thick brown layer of pollution hanging over Beirut’s skyline.

The image accompanied a statement about a ministerial meeting she attended alongside Economy and Trade Minister Amer Bisat, Energy and Water Minister Joe Saddi, and Justice Minister Adel Nassar, with Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar joining by phone, to discuss various aspects of power generators.

El-Zein explained that the environmental component of the discussion focused specifically on pollution from emissions and noise.

“We examined the best mechanisms to monitor compliance with environmental laws to ensure a reduction in air pollution levels, which have become catastrophic on all fronts—most alarmingly, the rising cancer rates,” she said.

She noted that in major cities like Beirut, power generators are the single largest source of air pollution among all contributing factors.
