Jordan: Endorsing Palestinian UN membership proves Israel's becoming a 'pariah state'

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi considered the vote in the United Nations General Assembly in favor of full membership for the State of Palestine as proof that "Israel is becoming a pariah state."

Safadi wrote on the X platform late Friday, "As Israel’s barbaric aggression on 2.3m Palestinians in Gaza continues, the majority of the world stood on the side of justice today, endorsing Palestinian membership of the UN in a decision further proving Israel is becoming a pariah state."

He added, "We thank all who took this stand."

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that the decision "reflects international consensus on the right of the State of Palestine to full membership in the United Nations," calling on the Security Council to "reconsider the request for Palestinian membership [...] without delay".

The resolution proposed by the UAE and adopted on Friday by a majority of 143 votes, with 9 opposed and 25 abstentions, states that the "State of Palestine is qualified for membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations and should therefore be admitted to membership in the United Nations."

While the resolution angered Israel, it was welcomed by the Palestinian Authority and Arab countries including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

In the face of the ongoing war in Gaza for more than seven months, Palestinians reiterated a request made in April 2011, seeking to make Palestine a fully-fledged member state of the United Nations, where it currently holds the status of "non-member observer state."

Granting full membership, before the vote in the General Assembly by a two-thirds majority, requires a positive recommendation from the Security Council. However, the United States vetoed a resolution to this effect on April 18.

Washington warned on Friday that if the issue returns to the Security Council, it expects "a similar outcome to that recorded in April."
