Before Lebanon’s independence in 1943, the country witnessed a presidential electoral battle in 1936 between Emile Eddé and Bechara el-Khoury, which was won by Eddé in the second round by 15 votes.
 
At the time, the House of Representatives consisted of only 25 deputies.
