Abu Shujaa: The Targeted Operation Against a Palestinian Resistance Leader

A report by Ahmad Abdallah, English adaptation by Nadine Sassine

In the early hours of Thursday morning, after receiving precise intelligence, Israeli special forces surrounded a building in the Nour Shams refugee camp where Abu Shujaa and a group of his comrades were holed up. The assault began with an intense exchange of gunfire between the two sides, and the Israeli forces fired a shoulder-launched missile at the besieged building, destroying large parts of it and killing those inside.

But who was this young man that Israel had long sought?
Mohammed Jaber, known as Abu Shujaa, was born in the Nour Shams refugee camp in Tulkarm Governorate in 1998, to a Palestinian family displaced by the Nakba of 1948 from the city of Haifa. Growing up amid the suffering of displacement and occupation shaped his early awareness and commitment to resistance.

His involvement in resistance began at a young age, as he was first arrested at 17 and subsequently detained several times, spending a total of five years in Israeli prisons. He also faced detention in Palestinian Authority jails due to his resistance activities.

In March 2022, Abu Shujaa co-founded the Tulkarm Battalion, a resistance group composed of members from various Palestinian factions. He assumed leadership of the battalion after its first commander, Saif Abu Labda, was killed. Under his leadership, the battalion expanded, becoming a key force in the West Bank, specializing in countering Israeli incursions and manufacturing explosive devices.

The Israeli army, in statements following the operation, confirmed that Abu Shujaa's assassination was due to his involvement in several resistance operations, including a shooting in June that resulted in the death of an Israeli.

Islamic Jihad mourned Abu Shujaa and his comrades, describing him as one of the brave field commanders who devoted their lives to the resistance.
With the loss of Mohammed Jaber, known as Abu Shujaa, the Palestinian resistance loses a steadfast field commander and a figure who posed a constant threat to the Israeli occupation in the West Bank.
