Israel's proposal for Yahya Sinwar: A new governance for Gaza or a political maneuver?

Report by Bassam Abou Zeid, English adaptation by Mariella Succar

On August 30, 1982, Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat, along with his leaders and fighters, departed Beirut by sea for Tunisia following an agreement made after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, which resulted in a military defeat for the organization.

A central question arises: Is Israel attempting to replicate this scenario with Hamas and its new political bureau chief, Yahya Sinwar?

In a recent development, Israel's Coordinator for Hostages and the Missing Gal Hirsch has proposed providing a "safe passage" for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and those who wish to accompany him to leave Gaza.

This offer depends on Sinwar agreeing to release all remaining hostages.

Hirsch's proposal also includes conditions for the disarmament of Gaza, the eradication of extremism, and the establishment of a new governing system in the territory.

Additionally, he mentioned that Israel would consider releasing prisoners it holds as part of any potential deal.

A source within Hamas told LBCI that the movement does not comment on what it deems "absurd" proposals, which are seen as attempts at distraction.

The source further noted that those making such proposals do not fully understand Yahya Sinwar, who planned and led the October 7 operation and is now the head of Hamas' political bureau.

The source considered that Sinwar continues to follow in the footsteps of the movement's leaders and fighters who have resisted and continue to resist the Israeli occupation, even to the point of martyrdom.
