Thousands of Singapore residents temporarily evacuated due to a World War II bomb explosion

Thousands of residents in Singapore were instructed to temporarily evacuate their homes on Tuesday after explosives experts detonated a World War II-era bomb, remnants of the Japanese occupation during the war.

The police revealed that the 100-kilogram bomb had been discovered last week during construction work in northeastern Singapore.

Bomb disposal experts conducted a controlled explosion on-site due to the high-risk nature of the device, necessitating a security cordon in the area. Over 4,000 residents were required to leave their homes temporarily during the operation.

During World War II, Singapore, a British colony at the time, experienced Japanese bombings in December 1941, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor aimed at crippling the US Pacific Fleet. The bombings intensified in January 1942.

By early February, Japanese forces invaded the region after a week of intense battles with British troops.
