Top Chinese diplomat in Hong Kong slams pro-democracy news outlet as 'deplorable'

China's top diplomat in Hong Kong slammed a shuttered pro-democracy news website as "deplorable" hours after the outlet and two of its former chief editors were found guilty of sedition.

"Stand News has presented itself as a media organization, but in reality, it... is a political organization," said a spokesperson for the commissioner's office of China's foreign ministry in Hong Kong, adding that the outlet held an anti-China stance that was "deplorable in nature."
