REPORT: Local, international condemnation of al-Qaa explosions
Four suicide bombers detonated themselves consecutively at dawn on Monday in the eastern border town of al-Qaa, killing 5 civilians and injuring 15 others.

Head of the Future Movement MP Saad Hariri deemed the terrorist operation that targeted al-Qaa region “a planned terrorist crime,” noting that this attack provides additional evidence that Lebanon needs to remain on alert in order to face the threats.

For his part, Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea said that the town of al-Qaa was not the original target for today’s attacks, hoping that the Higher Relief Commission and its Secretary General Mohamad Khair will send a team of experts to al-Qaa in order to conduct a full survey of the damages caused and compensate those affected as soon as possible.

In a series of tweets, Geagea stressed that “he categorically rejects the theory saying that Hezbollah is protecting Lebanon from the Islamic State,” noting that the Shiite party’s project does have Lebanon as a priority.

In this regard, former Prime Minister Najib Mikati denounced the explosions, stressing the need to reshuffle the priorities by fortifying the constitutional institutions, ending the disputes and supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces.

MP Talal Erslan condemned the terrorist attack, noting that such an incident should make the Lebanese factions more coherent, strength and conviction of the power of national unity, which much be preserved above all else.

In turn, former President Michel Sleiman asked via Twitter about the international coalition and its mission to root out the Islamic State and its allies. “What are they waiting for?” he said.

This as MP Walid Jumblatt said that terrorism targeted the border today and tomorrow will target inside Lebanon.

“Isn't it better that we reinforce the internal arena by electing a president?” he asked via his Twitter account.

Also via Twitter, former Minister Wiam Wahhab called for “forming special Lebanese army units and deploy them across the border regions, in order defend the towns threatened by the terrorists.”

Wahhab's media office issued a statement whereby its said that the explosions represent "coward act," urging the security apparatuses to double the efforts in order to prevent any attempt aiming at destabilizing the country.

Amal Movement strongly condemned the suicide bombings which hit al-Qaa, calling on the Lebanese people to enhance their national unity and rally around the Lebanon’s army.

Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil inspected the site of the explosions. He said: “We are in an ‘open war’ with terrorists who occupy our land.”

Hezbollah pointed out that al-Qaa's crime is the result of the clandestine and public support that is being offered by some countries and entities to the terrorists.

Head of Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun stated that the real condemnation is not for those who were misguided into blowing themselves up, but for the countries that planned and funded such attacks which led the region into a “Fiery Furnace”.

From New York, Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai denounced the series of explosions in al-Qaa, calling on the Lebanese people to stand united and side by side to face all that terrorists have planned for Lebanon.

In turn, the United States Embassy in Lebanon condemned the explosions that occurred in the region of al-Qaa, stressing its support and continuous commitment to the Lebanese Armed Forces and other security apparatuses in their fight against terror.

The British Embassy in Lebanon offered condolences to the victims’ families, stressing its commitment to supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces in a bid to protect Lebanon’s security and stability.

The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag strongly denounced the suicide bombings that targeted the town of al-Qaa, noting that terrorist attacks, anywhere around the world, are the most dangerous threats menacing world peace and security.

Kaag praised on the other hand the courage and commitment of the Lebanese Armed Forces and security apparatuses, calling for a sustainable international support in order to enhance their capabilities to face all forms of security challenges, including the terrorist threat in Lebanon and along the borders.

The coordinator stressed the need to bring all those involved in such acts to justice, reiterating that the International Community remains by Lebanon’s side.
