REPORT: Number of Lebanese deputies: How it evolved from 99 to 108 and up to 128?

In order to reach equality between the Muslims and Christians in Lebanon, the Taef Agreement stipulated that the number of deputies in the country shall be 128, including 54 Muslim MPs and 54 Christian MPs.

Up until 1960, the Lebanese Parliament was formed of 58 Christian deputies and 45 Muslim deputies.

The nine additional seats were added as follows:

3 Shiite seats in Tyre, Zahrani and Baalbek-Hermel

2 Sunni seats in Tripoli and Beirut

2 Druze seats in Beirut and Marjeyoun – Hasbaya

2 Alawite seats in Tripoli and Akkar

In 1992, the Syrian tutelage interfered and requested that the number of deputies should be increased to 128 in order for their allies to be represented in several regions.

Therefore 10 Christian seats and 10 Muslims were added.
