MP Yassine Jaber to LBCI: No parliamentary elections before holding presidential polls
Development and Liberation bloc MP Yassine Jaber said on Thursday that the ball is still in the cabinet's court in terms of carrying out the parliamentary elections.

"Parliamentary elections cannot be carried out without holding the presidential elections first," Jaber told LBCI, in an interview with Nharkom Said TV show.

On another note, Jaber stressed that the issues related to the Electricite du Liban company should be solved by dialogue.

Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Tuesday (August 12) the session tasked to elect a new president until September 2 for lack of required quorum.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum after Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.

Prior to last week's session, nine electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.

Last year, the parliament extended its mandate to November 2014 citing security reasons as the motive.

EDL contract workers staged an open-ended strike last week after accusing the company of not abiding by the law following a decision for the employment of only 897 out of the 2,000 workers.

The workers erected tents outside the company's headquarters and several of its branches, and closed its doors to prevent any employee from entering.

On Thursday, EDL Director General Kamal al-Hayek said the state-run firm was not a “barn” and denied the law had allowed all contract workers to become full-time employees.
