UNRWA chief Lazzarini discusses Gaza ceasefire, regional tensions with Parliament Speaker

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri in Beirut to discuss the escalating crises in the region.

Their discussion addressed the severe situations in Gaza, the West Bank, and the expanding conflict in Lebanon.

Lazzarini highlighted the impact of the ongoing tensions between Israel and Lebanon, noting that many Lebanese have been displaced to northern Israel or southern Lebanon.

"We must always be prepared for the worst, even though we hope for the best," he said. "The situation is indeed worrying."

He also mentioned that efforts in Gaza are currently focused on achieving a ceasefire, securing the release of hostages, and enhancing humanitarian aid.

Lazzarini discussed the challenges facing UNRWA, including persistent attacks and calls for the agency’s dismantlement.
