UN coordinator urges protection for civilians after deadly attack in Lebanon

The U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, lamented Tuesday's attack across Lebanon, which left many injured and killed, including children.

The statement said: "In accordance with international humanitarian law, she reminds all concerned actors that civilians are not a target and must be protected at all times. Even one civilian casualty is one too many."

According to the statement, Tuesday's developments mark "an extremely concerning escalation in what is an already unacceptably volatile context."

Meanwhile, Hennis-Plasschaert urged all concerned parties to abstain from any further action that could trigger a "wider conflagration that nobody can afford."

The Special Coordinator also stressed the urgency of restoring calm, calling on all concerned actors to prioritize stability.
