Macron renews call for ceasefire in Lebanon, urges sovereignty, and announces €100 million in aid

French President Emmanuel Macron renewed his call for a ceasefire in Lebanon on Thursday and expressed regret that "Iran has involved Hezbollah against Israel."

Macron criticized Israeli operations in southern Lebanon.

The French president emphasized, "Our goal is to strengthen Lebanon's sovereignty and ensure that the Lebanese regain control over their destiny," adding, "I hope Lebanon can rely on our commitment to emerge in peace and security."

Macron stressed that "the Lebanese Army plays a crucial role in ensuring security for all Lebanese under these circumstances. A ceasefire must be achieved, peacekeeping measures enforced along the Blue Line, and conditions provided for the return of the displaced."

He noted that "the main goal is for Lebanese authorities to assert control over the entirety of the country's territory, including south of the Litani River. Hezbollah must stop its attacks on Israel, regardless of the pretext, as war cannot be allowed to spread chaos in Lebanon and the surrounding areas."

Macron emphasized that "we must not import others' wars into Lebanon, and the Lebanese must unite. The UN mission in Lebanon must be adjusted to align with the new circumstances," adding that "attacks against it are unjustified." He also noted that "the conference will support recruiting 6,000 additional personnel for the Lebanese Army."

He stressed the need to "assist the Lebanese people, including displaced individuals and host communities," announcing that "France will contribute 100 million euros."
