Aoun holds parliamentary consultations at Baaba Palace-[REPORT]
President Michel Aoun held on Monday the binding parliamentary consultations to name a new Prime Minister – designate at the Baabda Presidential Palace.

Aoun first met with former prime minister Saad Hariri who named former premier Najib Mikati for the position.

Ten days ago, Hariri abandoned his efforts as a prime Minister-designate to form a new government after facing major challenges in navigating Lebanon's power-sharing structure to secure an agreement over a cabinet that would deal with the crisis-hit country.

For his part, former prime minister Tammam Salam also named Mikati for the premiership, voicing hopes that a new government would be formed soon.

This as head of the Lebanese Democratic Party MP Talal Arslan announced via his Twitter account that he will not partake in the binding consultations.

In turn, Deputy Speaker Elie el-Ferzli as well as the Future Movement named Mikati to be Lebanon’s next Prime Minister-designate.

Speaking on behalf of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, MP Mohammad Raad said that the bloc named Mikati as a premier.

Raad noted that the formation of a government is “the mandatory crossing and the necessary entrance that enables us to facilitate the daily lives of the citizens.”

The Lebanese National Bloc also named Mikati during its meeting with President Aoun at Baabda.

“We named Mikati and asked President Aoun to facilitate the formation process,” MP Toni Frangieh said following the meeting.

This as the Democratic Gathering bloc named Najib Mikati also, voicing hopes that all political powers would facilitate the formation of a new government.

For its part, the Independent Central bloc also named Mikati for the premiership.

As for the Strong Republic bloc, it asserted from the Baabda Palace that it will not name anyone for the premiership.

“We must be honest with the people and with ourselves,” MP Georges Adwan said on behalf of the bloc.

He also noted that “change is impossible with this ruling majority.”

The Development and Liberation bloc also named Mikati to be Lebanon’s next prime minister.

This as the Strong Lebanon bloc did not name anyone for the position.

As for independent lawmaker Eddie Demirjian, he named Mikati for the position.

For his part, independent MP Michel Daher named also Mikati, saying that “he is the best suggested option.”

In turn, independent MP Fouad Makhzoumi named Nawaf Salam for the premiership, while MP Chamel Roukoz did not name anyone.

As for independent MP Jamil al-Sayyed, he said that the country needs a serious government.

“Therefore I will not name Mikati,” he added.

This as independent lawmakers Jean Talouzian and Jihad al-Samad named Mikati for the position.

Lebanon has been without a government for nearly a year, since a huge explosion devastated large parts of Beirut.

As per the Lebanese Constitution, Aoun is required to designate a prime minister after holding binding consultations with all parliamentary blocs, naming the one that garners the most votes from these blocs.
