German vote winner Merz says seeks coalition with center-left SPD

The leader of Germany's conservatives, Friedrich Merz, whose CDU/CSU bloc won national elections, said Monday that he intended to form a coalition with the center-left Social Democrats of outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

"Together with the Social Democrats... we are in a position to form a government... and that is exactly what we want," Merz told a press conference in Berlin after Sunday's vote.
