Beirut's slaughterhouse to be closed for renovations works
Beirut Governor Ziad Chebib said on Tuesday that he issued a decision to temporarily close Beirut’s slaughterhouse to carry our renovation works.

Chebib said he inked a decision to start upgrading the slaughterhouse so that it meets health and safety standards.

Activities inside the facility will be suspended as of Wednesday until the decision is fully implemented, Chebib added.

The condition of the slaughterhouse came following a food scandal that emerged last week, when Health Minister Wael Abou Faour announced the names of supermarkets and restaurants across Lebanon selling contaminated meat.

For his part, Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt said on Wednesday via his Twitter account that the closure of the slaughterhouse is a “cosmetic action,” adding that a new brand slaughterhouse is to be built in the same location away from political pressures."

He also said citizens of Beirut reject "cosmetic action".
