PM Mikati: Diplomatic communications intensify in effort to secure ceasefire

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that diplomatic communications have intensified in recent hours ahead of a United Nations Security Council meeting. The goal is to secure a ceasefire and increase pressure to halt Israeli aggression against Lebanon.

Mikati stated that discussions are taking place between the United States and France, which requested the Security Council meeting. The aim is to revive the temporary ceasefire announcement to facilitate renewed discussions on political solutions.

“We have expressed our readiness to implement Resolution 1701, provided that Israel adheres to all its provisions,” Mikati said.

He emphasized the urgent need to stop Israeli aggression, which has resulted in numerous casualties, including civilians and emergency personnel.

“Violence, killing, and destruction will not lead to a solution,” he added, warning that if the situation escalates, confrontations could extend throughout the region.

Furthermore, Mikati confirmed that the government’s emergency plan for assisting displaced individuals is being implemented continuously.

He noted that regular reviews are underway to address any shortcomings, as the scale of displacement has created significant pressure on resources.

“The support of friendly and brotherly countries, as well as international organizations, is crucial in alleviating the burden of the displacement crisis during these exceptional circumstances,” Mikati stated.

He has also been in contact with Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi to address security issues in several regions and has called for a meeting to discuss these matters comprehensively.
