REPORT: Chouf’s war-displaced Christians return to their homes
Lebanese President Michel Sleiman reiterated on Saturday that he abides by the Baabda Declaration which aims to distance Lebanon from regional crises.

Sleiman's comments were made as hundreds gathered in the Chouf village of Brih to consolidate the reconciliation between Christians and Druze.

"The Lebanese state and its army alone are entrusted with defending the country," he said, adding that the state is capable of upholding coexistence and securing the return of the displaced to their homes.

For his part, Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai said the country needs a new president who can continue along the path of reconciliation and dialogue, urging the parliament to elect a new head of state before May 25.

Cardinal Rai also called on all the Lebanese to follow the example of Brih and reconcile in a bid to overcome their discrepancies and address looming challenges.

In turn, head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt stated that the celebration in Brih will put an end to the divisions of the past and restore ties between Christians and Druze.

Jumblatt hailed President Sleiman’s stances, pointing out that the latter has guided Lebanon through various challenges and was able to prevent the country from falling into chaos and vacuum.

He also stressed the necessity of adherence to the Baabda Declaration; however, lamented the failure in its complete implementation due to the regional crises.

MP Jumblatt also said that Patriarch Rai’s presence in Brih asserts the role of Christians in the region despite all the challenges.

On another note, MP Jumblatt commented on his centrist role in the Lebanese politics, stating that his positions helped him in affirming the authority of the state.

Christians were forced to leave the Chouf village of Brih during Lebanon's Civil War.

Reconciliation efforts have been exerted to bring them back to their homes.

Brih was originally inhabited by Christians and Druze.
