Lebanon's interior minister tells LBCI: Nation grapples with historic displacement, no signs of internal conflict

Caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi confirmed that Lebanon is facing the largest displacement crisis in its history, yet the affected areas have managed to absorb it. He emphasized that despite rumors, the Lebanese people remain united.

In an interview with LBCI, Mawlawi said recent security incidents were minor and urged the Lebanese to maintain their unity.

"The political discourse in Lebanon has often carried elements of division, including talk of support fronts and unified arenas, but the reports we have do not indicate an internal war or conflict," he said.

He added, "Security forces can enter shelters at any time, and the authorities will conduct necessary searches when needed."

Mawlawi assured that those spreading rumors, causing panic among citizens, are being pursued.

He revealed that preparations are underway to set up more shelter spaces in Beirut, noting there are currently 167 shelters in the city.

Mawlawi stressed that the state is present in the Rmeish area and that security forces remain active there, reassuring the public that the state will not abandon its citizens.

He added, "The number of Syrian refugees who have left Lebanon through land border crossings has reached 343,000. We are taking all measures to ensure the return of all Syrians to Syria, and we are committed to this process."

Mawlawi also pointed out that Israel has escalated the war, reaching deep into Lebanese territory.

He called on all countries and the international community to continue supporting Lebanon in overcoming this crisis.

He noted that caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati will present Lebanon's needs at the upcoming Paris conference.
